Boiler fault codes
Ideal F1 fault code: low pressure
Ideal F1 is a low pressure fault. It appears on the display as a flashing F followed by a 1. Ideal’s own description is that the water pressure in the system is too low and needs topping up to between 1 to 1.5 bar. Check the gauge, top the system up through the filling loop and reset, and the code should clear. If the pressure keeps dropping, a professional needs to find out where it is going. That is the usual story behind a repeat Ideal F1.
What the Ideal F1 fault code means
The boiler works from a sealed circuit of water. When the gauge falls below the lower limit, the display flashes F1 to tell you.
Pressure can fall for ordinary reasons. Bleeding a radiator lets a little water out, and a small leak or a recent repair has the same effect. One low reading isn’t a worry. The pattern matters, and Ideal says that frequent topping up needs to be checked by a professional to find the source of the pressure loss.
How to top up the pressure on an Ideal boiler
Ideal tells you to bring the pressure back to the range given above, and it links a video that shows how. The filling loop, the reset and the exact steps differ between Ideal models, so use the manual for yours. Ideal publishes user guides and manuals on its website.
- Read the gauge and note the number.
- Find the filling loop, which your manual shows.
- Open it slowly until the needle rises into the right range.
- Close it, and don’t let the pressure overshoot.
- Reset the boiler as your manual describes.
Other Ideal codes that involve pressure
Low pressure can also trigger other Ideal codes. For L1, which is a flow temperature overheat or no water flow, Ideal’s advice is to check that the pressure is in the normal range, make sure all radiator valves are open, check the pressure and then reset. For L3, no water flow, the steps include confirming that the gas isolation valve is open, bleeding the radiators and checking that the pressure is still in range before you turn the boiler on and reset it. If neither fixes it, Ideal asks you to contact it and quote the code.
A separate guide covers the flame code, Ideal L2.
When Ideal F1 keeps coming back
Topping up once and finding the pressure gone again within days means water is leaving the system. The filling loop doesn’t cure that. A Gas Safe registered engineer should find the cause, and the sooner they do, the less damage the water does. If the boiler is still under guarantee, contact Ideal first so that the visit doesn’t affect your cover.
Don’t open the boiler casing yourself. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
