Boiler repairs
A boiler repair is a Gas Safe registered engineer finding the fault and replacing the part that has failed. What it costs depends on the part, because labour is a few hours at most and the part makes the difference between a small bill and a large one.
Who boiler repairs suit
Suits
- A boiler that has stopped working or shows a fault code
- Owners deciding whether to repair or replace
- Anyone who wants a price range before the engineer arrives
Good points
- Quick to fix when the part is in stock
- Far cheaper than a new boiler for a single fault
- A fault code can narrow the cause before the visit
Watch out for
- The final bill depends on what the engineer finds
- Parts for older boilers can be hard to get
- Repeated repairs can add up to the price of a replacement
What boiler repairs cost
Boiler repairs typically cost £350 (Typical boiler fault repair, parts and labour), with most jobs between £140 and £500. That includes VAT at 20%. Fitting takes 1–3 hours on site.

Where the money goes on boiler repairs
| Element | Typical range |
|---|---|
| A typical fault repair A new part plus labour for a common fault, such as a sensor, valve or pump. This row is the headline price and covers the range. | £140 – £500 |
| Heat exchanger replacement One of the dearer parts to replace. Worth weighing against a new boiler, especially on an older model. | £400 – £800 |
| Emergency call-out fee The call-out charge alone, before parts and labour, for an out-of-hours or same-day visit. | £120 – £460 |
Guide prices including VAT. Your actual cost depends on your home, access and specification.
What moves the price of boiler repairs
- The part
A small part such as a sensor costs far less than a heat exchanger or a circuit board. The fault code on the display often points to the part.
- Where you live
Engineers charge more in London and the South East than in the North and in Scotland, and the regional pages show the difference.
- The boiler's age
Older boilers have parts that are harder to find, which raises the price and can make a repair poor value.
- When you call
Out-of-hours and same-day visits carry a call-out fee that a booked weekday visit does not.
What a quote for boiler repairs should include
If a quote is missing any of these, ask why before you compare it with another.
- A written price for the visit, the diagnosis and the part, before work starts
- Whether there is a call-out fee, and whether it comes off the repair bill
- The guarantee on the part and on the labour
- Whether the engineer is Gas Safe registered, and the ID card number to check
- Whether the price includes VAT
- What the engineer says about the age of the boiler and whether a replacement makes more sense

Common questions about boiler repairs
Is it worth repairing an old boiler?
Often, if the fault is a small part. When repairs keep coming, the parts are hard to find or a single repair approaches the price of a replacement, a new boiler usually makes more sense.
Can I fix a fault code myself?
Some codes have simple checks a homeowner can make, such as topping up the pressure or checking the gas credit. Others are an engineer's job. Our boiler fault codes guide explains which.
Does a boiler repair come with a guarantee?
Ask. Reputable engineers guarantee the part and their labour, and the guarantee should be written on the invoice.
Does the engineer have to be Gas Safe registered?
Yes. Work on a gas boiler has to be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and you should check their ID card before they start. Our Gas Safe Register guide shows how.
Is VAT included in the price shown?
Yes. Every price on this site includes VAT. A VAT-registered business normally charges it on boiler work, and an engineer who is not registered does not, so put quotes on the same basis before you compare them.
