Boiler service and repair prices

A boiler service is a yearly check by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and a repair is what follows when something has failed. Here is what each typically costs, what is included and what to ask before you book.

How to choose a boiler service or repair

Book a service once a year, ideally before the heating season starts. Many manufacturers ask for it before they honour a long warranty, so a missed service can cost you cover. A repair is a different job: it is the engineer finding the fault and replacing the part, and the price depends mostly on the part.

Every page shows what the job typically costs, what moves the price and what a quote should include, so you can compare like with like. A service does not include repairs, so anything found is quoted separately.

What to compare across boiler service and repair quotes

  • What is checked. A proper service lists its checks and gives you a record. Ask for the list, because a cheap visit that checks less is not the same job.
  • Call-out fees. A repair booked in advance costs less than an emergency visit, which carries a call-out charge. Ask whether the fee comes off the repair bill.
  • The engineer. Work on a gas boiler has to be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, so check the ID card. See our Gas Safe Register guide.
  • Repair or replace. When a repair bill approaches the price of a new boiler, look at combi boiler prices. Our guide to boiler fault codes explains what a code on the display means.
